Ballet Folklórico Los Angelitos is more than just a dance program; it is a transformative experience for children at Casa Hogar Los Angelitos. Founded by Nancy Nystrom in 2003, it is part of her efforts to provide unique opportunities for the children. Through cultural dance, children gain confidence, discipline, and a sense of belonging. This program preserves cultural heritage and profoundly impacts participants, fostering personal growth and community pride.
The mission of Ballet Folklórico Los Angelitos is to use the power of expressive arts to heal, inspire, and empower children. By engaging in cultural dance, children develop essential life skills, build self-esteem, and connect with their heritage, all within a supportive and nurturing environment.
Ballet Folklórico Los Angelitos is dedicated to preserving and celebrating Mexican cultural heritage. Children learn traditional dances that connect them to their roots and instill a sense of pride in their identity.
Through rigorous training and performance opportunities, young people gain confidence, discipline, and a sense of accomplishment. The program teaches valuable life skills that extend beyond the dance floor, helping young people succeed in various aspects of their lives.
The discipline and skills learned in the expressive arts program open doors to future opportunities. Many former participants have gone on to pursue higher education and careers in the arts, becoming role models for their peers and ambassadors of their culture.
I realized during the early years of this work that providing nutrition for hungry children was life-saving and important. Empty stomachs need to be filled…. However, I knew that we needed to do more than rescue children and fill their stomachs. We needed to fill their hearts and their minds as well.

In 2007, CHLA opened its doors to young people in the community, along with the children of CHLA, inviting them to join the Expressive Arts program through Ballet Folklórico Los Angelitos (BFLA). This initiative provides an opportunity for all participants to experience the transformative benefits of artistic expression.
Many children and youth in BFLA come from challenging backgrounds. Through dance, they find a positive outlet for their energy and emotions, fostering personal growth, discipline, and resilience. This creative expression not only enhances their self-esteem but also leads to significant improvements in academic performance and overall well-being.
In 2009, BFLA embarked on its first international tour to the United States, marking the beginning of an annual tradition that continues to this day, reaching different countries around the world. These international tours provide participants with invaluable learning experiences, exposing them to new cultures, broadening their perspectives, and fostering leadership skills that extend beyond the stage.
Over the years, BFLA has grown into a highly acclaimed dance group, recognized both nationally and internationally for its artistic excellence and cultural representation. Through dedication, discipline, and passion, the program has become a platform for young people to develop confidence, leadership, and a sense of global citizenship.
